Brisbane AHWED logoIf you are at home, feeling you don’t know which way to turn because an eating disorder is causing havoc in your life, read on!

Are you caring for a son, a daughter or partner who has an eating disorder? Or perhaps you have an eating disorder, as I did, and are trying to care for yourself? May be you are a clinician or nurse, or a student studying mental health.

Perhaps you wanted to attend the At Home with Eating Disorders conference, Australia’s first such conference for carers and sufferers, but could not get there. Or you got there, and wish you could go again to soak up and absorb the abundance of information and guidance on offer.

The good news is that now you can attend the conference sessions, again and again, by clicking here: and as you listen to, and watch each session, you will find guidance, insights, hope, knowledge and understanding.

The conference, held in Brisbane in May, has been a dream come true. Back in January 2012, I shared the dream: how wonderful that this dream has become a reality and furthermore, now you can access the sessions presented at the At Home with Eating Disorders conference (click here for program overview).

The sessions contain a hive of information for:

  • carers
  • sufferers
  • clinicians, nurses and everyone working in the mental health field.

The 2013 ‘At Home with Eating Disorders’ conference was Australia’s first gathering of carers for people with eating disorders. It brought together national and international experts to recast the role of families and carers as a critical part of eating disorders treatment.

Increasing evidence reveals that parents, partners and other family members can provide a pivotal role in caring for children and adult sufferers. The Brisbane

conference set out to end the stigma, and help carers to build the necessary skills, knowledge and resilience to provide meaningful support in their loved one’s treatment.

Our conference speakers included:

Professor Janet Treasure – Eating disorders treatment specialist from the South London and Maudsley Hospital and Kings College London.

Professor Daniel Le Grange – Director of the Eating Disorders Program and Professor of Psychiatry from the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neuroscience at the University of Chicago.

Professor Cynthia Bulik – Professor of Eating Disorders at the Department of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine, Professor of Nutrition at the Gillings School of Global Public Health, and director of the UNC Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders.

Professor Stephen Touyz – Professor of Clinical Psychology and Honorary Professor in the Discipline of Psychiatry at the University of Sydney.

Dr Warren Ward – Director of the Eating Disorders Service at the Royal Brisbane Women’s and Children’s Hospital, and Secretary of the Australia & New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders (ANZAED).

Dr Andrew Wallis – Deputy Head of the Department of Adolescent Medicine, and Head of Family Therapy for the Eating Disorder Service at the Westmead Children’s Hospital, Sydney

Joint presenters of the conference comprised: Butterfly Foundation, FEAST, Eating Disorders Outreach Service (EDOS) and Australia and New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders (ANZAED). (Click here for more information on these organisations).

The video link sessions are offered at no cost as the conference committee’s desire is to share the knowledge widely and with all – especially with families who are caring for a loved one right now, and for people who are self-caring, determined to regain their life.

On the other hand, if you would like to provide payment, opportunity to do so is provided – all monies received in this way will maintain the conference’s positive outcomes by being placed in a fund to assist carers of people with eating disorders.
